Diocesan Executive Assistant attends churchwide business conference in New York
October 8, 2014
Lauren Kinard, Executive Assistant to the Bishop, has just returned from attending The Episcopal Business Administration Conference for Dioceses (EBAC) in New York City, an annual three-day conference sponsored by the Church Pension Group and the Domestic and Foreign Missionary Society. The conference provides orientation, professional development and resource sharing for diocesan treasurers and business administrators in the Episcopal Church. The purpose of the conference is to enhance the ability of these professionals to be of service to the Church at all levels. Workshops are conducted by members of both the Church Pension Fund and the Episcopal Church Center staffs. The conference provides the opportunity for diocesan staff to develop their professional skills, share resources and network with staff from other dioceses.
EBAC was held at the Roosevelt Hotel, and more than 130 people attended from 79 dioceses, including the Virgin Islands, Hawaii and Alaska. Lauren says the participants met with CPG staff responsible for pensions, life insurance and health insurance, property insurance, ordination and clergy records and other aspects of church business. Receptions, dinners and other events provided time for fellowship, networking, and sharing experiences.
The first day was a 6-hour workshop for Lauren and about 20 other administrators who are new to their positions. “I had the most experience with 20 months – one guy had his first day on Monday!” Lauren says.
Other workshops were offered on topics such as benefits, clergy pensions, caring for our retired, best practices in managing employees, clergy ordination and retirement trends, and Medical Trust Plan Array Strategy. “It was impressive to meet the people behind all that goes on at CPG, and seeing their experience and knowledge in their field – we are in great hands,” Lauren says.
The Church Pension Group made it possible for Lauren to participate, with a scholarship for conference fees and a grant for transportation costs. CPG has partnered closely with The Episcopal Church in South Carolina during the past 20 months, assisting in the many steps that have been necessary for the reorganization of the diocese.
Lauren was appointed by Bishop vonRosenberg in February 2013 and works in the Diocesan Office at 98 Wentworth St., Charleston. Contact her at (843) 259-2016 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
