Archdeacon of the Diocese

The Right Reverend Charles vonRosenberg, Bishop of the diocese, is pleased to appoint the Reverend Calhoun Walpole, to serve as the Archdeacon of the diocese, on a half-time basis, effective March 1, 2013. Callie will continue as Vicar of Grace Church in Charleston and will complete her ministry as Priest in Charge of St. Mark’s, Charleston, at the end of February. There will be a special celebration of her ministry at St. Mark’s on Sunday, February 24.
Callie's responsibilities as Archdeacon will include service as Convention Secretary and as clergy transition officer and resource person for other programs in The Episcopal Church in South Carolina. Callie will continue to have her office at Grace Church, 98 Wentworth St., Charleston, SC 29401. She can be reached at (843) 723-4575 or by email at cwalpole@episcopalchurchsc.org. A native of John’s Island, Callie was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church from her baptism until she entered seminary, and served there on the vestry and in other capacities. She also served the Diocese as Missioner for Hispanic Ministry and as lay vicar for the congregation of San Juan on John’s Island. She has coordinated the diocesan companion relationship between South Carolina and the Dominican Republic. Callie graduated from The University of the South with a Master of Divinity degree in 2005. She has taught Spanish at Burke High School and at Bishop England. She served as assistant rector of Holy Cross Faith Memorial Episcopal Church on Pawley’s Island from 2005-2008. In 2009 she was named Vicar of Grace Episcopal Church in Charleston, where she continues to serve on a half-time basis. From February 2012 through February 2013, Callie also served as Priest in Charge at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in downtown Charleston on a half-time basis, bringing leadership to that historic congregation while it was without a rector. |
Chaplain to the Retired Clergy
The Reverend Alastair Votaw was appointed by Bishop vonRosenberg in April 2013 as Chaplain to the Retired Clergy in The Episcopal Church in South Carolina. Al and his wife Rhoda Votaw will be partners in the chaplaincy, working to provide inclusion, enrichment and pastoral support for retired clergy, their spouses and partners, and survivors. Ecumenical and Interfaith Officer
Bishop vonRosenberg has appointed the Reverend Canon J. Michael A. Wright, Rector of Grace Episcopal Church, Charleston, as Diocesan Ecumenical and Interfaith Officer for The Episcopal Church in South Carolina. Canon Wright follows the Reverend Dow Sanderson, Rector of the Church of the Holy Communion in Charleston, in the important work of building and sustaining relationships with other faith communities. The Reverend Stan McGraw St. Mark's, Charleston

The Reverend Stan McGraw has been named Priest in Charge at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Charleston, as St. Mark's continues its search for a rector. A graduate of Wofford College, he attended Candler School of Theology at Emory University and graduated from Virginia Theological Seminary. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1970 in the Diocese of South Carolina. He was rector of the Church of the Epiphany in Atlanta, and assistant to the Bishop of Atlanta in charge of social ministries. He served on various diocesan committees in the Diocese of Atlanta and was a part time chaplain at US Federal Prison, also in Atlanta. He was Priest-in Charge of Holy Comforter Church, which is a church composed of street people and people from group homes. He was given an award from Dekalb County for his work with the mentally ill. Holy Comforter was written up in Atlanta Magazine as one of the unique churches in Atlanta. He is married to the Reverend Jean Q. McGraw, an Episcopal priest, and they have three children and five grandchildren.

Calvary Episcopal Church on Line Street in Charleston has called the Reverend William L. (Roy) Hills Jr.(B.A., M.Div., PhD) to serve as Interim Rector, after the retirement of the Reverend Ted Lewis, who served at Calvary for 20 years. Roy says he is excited and humbled to be serving in full-time ministry at Calvary and in The Episcopal Church in South Carolina.

The Reverend John Zahl has been appointed as Associate Priest at Grace beginning in December 2012. John comes to Grace having served as Associate at Holy Cross, Sullivan's Island for the past five years. Along with sharing in the regular liturgical ministries at Grace, John will be responsible for overseeing the ministry of Pastoral Care as well as serving as Chaplain of the Little School.
