Her mission as a priest is, “Always recognizing God's sovereignty and initiative, I seek to celebrate God's covenant with us, steadfast love for us, and creative work among us.” Sandy will begin with St. Catherine’s on May 1. On Sunday, April 26, churches throughout our diocese celebrated the Third Sunday of Easter with online services of worship, as the suspension of public worship services continues due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Lauren Kinard, Executive Assistant to the Bishop and Diocesan Administrator, was elected last week to the B+E+S+T Board as Member-at-Large at the group’s virtual Annual Meeting on Friday. B+E+S+T is a professional association of men and women who support Episcopal Bishops with the mission to empower each other through networking and education.
The Member-at-Large position is a two-year term and Lauren will work with the group’s provincial representatives and also coordinate education and gatherings for new B+E+S+T members (known as B+E+S+Ties) that start in between conferences. The picture above shows Lauren (back row, second from the right) with other Province IV representatives at last year's conference. The Standing Committee has announced that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Diocese of South Carolina will continue with the suspension of all public church services and group gatherings until indication is given by medical experts and government officials that we can safely gather again. The Standing Committee is currently at work compiling resources that will assist them in making the best decision for all of our congregations. This work is being done in consultation with the clergy of the diocese and both scientific and medical professionals. Online worship and virtual gatherings will continue through at least May 18.
A Note From the Archdeacon Regarding Today's Notice: As we continue to confront the coronavirus, today’s notice from the Standing Committee certainly comes as no surprise. Here in our diocese, laity and clergy alike are working hard both to worship and provide worship for the people of God in a variety of settings. You are to be commended for your creativity and willingness to adapt to changing circumstances. I know we are all grateful for the diligent work of the Standing Committee on our behalf. The reality is, we are—each of us in our own way, yet together—simply continuing to be the Church during this time, moving forward in faith, and claiming our Lord’s Resurrection for our own this Eastertide. As Jesus’s disciples said to each other after encountering the Risen Lord on the road to Emmaus: “Were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road...”? Our Lord always meets us along the road, the pathway of our lives. Jesus comes to us wherever we find ourselves along the way, even during this particular pilgrimage season of pandemic. Alleluia! Christ is risen. Faithfully yours, Callie ![]() As the COVID-19 coronavirus continues to impact our daily lives and immediate future, the Rev. Cn. Caleb Lee, President of the Standing Committee of The Diocese of South Carolina, has written an update regarding the current search for the XV Bishop of the Diocese of South Carolina. A copy of his letter can be viewed here. The text of the letter is below: April 22, 2020 Dear Faithful People of the Diocese of South Carolina, The COVID-19 pandemic is the most unprecedented national and global crisis in any of our lifetimes and it has presented all of us with unique and unforeseen challenges in almost every aspect of our lives. As we are all well aware, the Church is not excluded from these challenges. Due to various factors outside of our control, the Standing Committee has made the decision to pause the Search for the XV Bishop of the Diocese of South Carolina. This decision was made in consultation with The Reverend Dr. Philip C. Linder, Chair of the Search Committee, and our Search Consultant, The Reverend Canon Rick Callaway. We will reassess this decision on an ongoing basis. Rest assured that there is no one more ready to have a diocesan bishop than members of your Standing Committee! There are many factors that were considered in this decision. However, our primary reason for making this decision was to safeguard the integrity of the discernment process for possible candidates, the Search Committee, and the diocese. We are not the only diocese with this challenge. There are currently 18 dioceses that have had to modify or postpone part of their search process because of COVID-19. The good news is that our excellent committee is in full agreement with this decision and are at a point in the process where a pause can be easily managed. By the end of April, the Search Committee will be finished with the Diocesan Profile and all the preparation necessary to begin receiving nominations. Therefore, when your Standing Committee decides to proceed, there will be very little time between that decision and when the Diocesan Profile is published and nominations can be received. Unfortunately, this means that our current timeline, including the anticipated election at our Annual Convention in November, will have to be altered. Due to the uncertainty of this time we are not able to make a decision about when that will be at this point. However, we plan to proceed as soon as possible. Our Search Consultant has stated on more than one occasion that our Diocese has one of the most energetic and hardworking search committees with whom he has ever worked. It did not surprise me that he said this. We have great people in this diocese; people who have endured much and yet still rise to unprecedented challenges with grace and unbelievable faithfulness. I speak for your entire Standing Committee when I say that we are very grateful and honored to be serving you during these times, and we remain very excited about our future. Faithfully yours, The Reverend Canon Caleb J. Lee President of the Standing Committee ![]() On Sunday, April 19, churches throughout our diocese celebrated the Second Sunday of Easter with online services of worship, as the suspension of public worship services continues due to the COVID-19 pandemic. ![]() The Right Reverend John Clark Buchanan, a native of Laurens County, SC, who began his ordained ministry in the Diocese of South Carolina and used his unique gifts for bringing people together to assist the diocese through its reorganization, died Wednesday, April 15, in Charleston. Bishop Buchanan was ordained a priest by the Rt. Rev. Gray Temple in 1970. He served at St. Barnabas, Dillon; St. Matthew’s, Darlington; and St. Andrew’s, Mt. Pleasant; before his election as Bishop Coadjutor for the Diocese of West Missouri in 1988, where he was consecrated in February 1989. He became Diocesan Bishop in 1990 and remained there until his retirement in 1999 (The Diocese of West Missouri has shared this announcement). He returned to South Carolina and served at St. Michael’s, Charleston, until 2004 when he answered the call to become Assisting Bishop for the Diocese of Texas. In 2003, he began serving as the Parlimentarian for the House of Bishops of The Episcopal Church. From 2006-2008, he served as Interim Bishop for the Diocese of Southern Virginia and then as the Provisional Bishop for the Diocese of Quincy (Illinois) from 2009-2013. When that diocese reunited with the Diocese of Chicago in 2013, he served as Assisting Bishop through 2014. From 2012-2013 served as an Advisory Bishop to the reorganizing diocese of The Episcopal Church in South Carolina.
