The Rev. Jenny Newman Bishop Ruth Woodliff-Stanley has called the Reverend Jenny Newman to serve as the next rector of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Port Royal. Jenny brings a diverse and unique background to this call, most recently serving in Hattiesburg, Mississippi in a dual role as rector of The Episcopal Church of the Ascension and chaplain for the Episcopal campus ministry at the University of Southern Mississippi. She will begin her time with St. Mark’s on November 1, 2025. The bishop shared her excitement about this call. “I am absolutely thrilled that the vestry of St. Mark’s has elected and asked me to call the Reverend Jenny Newman to serve as their rector,” said Bishop Woodliff-Stanley. “Reverend Newman brings a breadth of experience, a deep commitment to the work of building the church, and a strong track record of ministry. She hails from my home diocese of Mississippi, and I quickly learned how deeply respected and loved she is across that diocese. We are blessed that she has accepted this call, and I look forward to welcoming her to the parish of St. Mark’s and to our diocese.” In the announcement from St. Mark’s earlier shared earlier today, the church noted that their new rector is “an engaging preacher who combines her thorough knowledge of Scripture with storytelling to explicate the Gospel and its application to daily life.” It continues: “She is a creative, collaborative leader who knows how to chart a course and how to correct one. She is committed to her core to service and outreach. Jenny brings uncommon maturity, intelligence, warmth, energy and presence to her ministry.” Read the full announcement at this link. Jenny is enthusiastically anticipating becoming part of the St. Mark’s community. “From the moment I read the profile, I felt an undeniable tug toward St. Mark’s,” said Newman. “The search committee and leadership have astounded me with their thoughtful, wholehearted, and prayerful engagement, and I am deeply grateful to be linking arms and hearts with them in the good work happening here. What a delight it will be to get to know the people of St. Mark’s and the Diocese of South Carolina; I can only imagine what good things lie ahead!” Ordained to the priesthood in the Diocese of Mississippi in 2021, Jenny earned a Master of Divinity from the Seminary of the Southwest in that same year and a bachelor’s degree in biblical studies from William Carey University in 2001. She also holds a Master of Science in counseling psychology from Mississippi College (2008) and is currently pursuing a Doctor of Ministry through Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary with a concentration in leadership. Jenny lives with Bailey, her 14-year-old Westie. She has two younger brothers and two nephews and a niece whom she loves to spoil. In her spare time, she enjoys ocean kayaking, hiking, travel, music and seeing wonder in the world. On Saturday, September 6, Bishop Ruth Woodliff-Stanley installed the Very Rev. Dr. Michael Shaffer as the 23rd rector of the historic St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Charleston. Seminarian Shawan Gillians served as preacher. Father Michael, who also serves as dean of the Peninsula Deanery, was called to serve as interim rector of St. Mark's in September 2023. While part of his charge then was to help the church discern their mission and ministry on a path to find a full-time rector, it wasn't long before the people of St. Mark's expressed to the bishop that they wanted to call him as their next rector. The vestry and leadership of St. Mark's announced on Sunday, May 25, that Father Michael had accepted the call to serve as 23rd rector. As St. Mark's celebrates the 160th anniversary of their founding this year, this is an exciting chapter in the church's long story! See more photos from Saturday's service on Facebook at this link. Bishop Ruth Woodliff-Stanley hosted members of the Transitions in Ministry group (TiM) for their annual retreat September 7-8, at St. Christopher Camp and Conference Center on Seabrook Island. TiM is comprised of priests who are newly ordained, new to the diocese, or serving in a new role. They meet regularly as a cohort throughout the year, participating in learning sessions, fellowship, and peer support groups. Inaugurated in 2024, this two-year program fosters relationships within the clergy collegium and supports members as they go about life and ministry in new ways. The Rev. Philip Linder, Canon to the Ordinary, and the Rev. Ryan Currie, Canon for Common Mission, facilitate the group. At this year’s retreat, we welcomed two new priests to TiM: the Rev. Jordan Trendelman, rector, Holy Communion, Charleston; and the Rev. Julia Madden, associate rector for pastoral care and parish life, St. Stephen’s, Charleston. As always, the group would like to express its gratitude to the St. Christopher team for their warm hospitality. Bishop Ruth Woodliff-Stanley recently provided a video update about the ongoing feasilibility study in our diocese, being conducted with the assistance of The Episcopal Church, to consider the possiblity of a diocesan-wide capital campaign. Watch the update by clicking the image above or clicking this link. The bishop outlined the progress over the past few months and talked about what we can expect over the next few weeks and months.
Much of the progress to this point has centered around feasibility forums/focus groups hosted by the bishop across the diocese over the past few months. If you were unable to attend one of these events in your deanery, an online forum was held on the evening of July 16 and a recording of the event can be watched on the diocesan YouTube page at this link. Findings of the feasibilty study will be announced at our 235th Diocesan Convention in November. As part of the study, our diocese is working with Vandersall Collective, the firm contracted by The Episcopal Church to manage this feasibility study. As part of the project, they created a case statement which can be viewed at this link. Bishop Ruth Woodliff-Stanley presided over the service of worship receiving the Rev. David Hudspeth into the priesthood of The Episcopal Church on Wednesday, August 27, at St. Luke's Chapel in Summerville (the church where Good Shepherd, Summerville is currently holding their weekly services; located at 208 Central Avenue). The church shared a number of beautiful photos from the service on their Facebook page at this link.
Father David currently serves as a hospital chaplain and was previously ordained within another communion by a bishop within the historic succession of bishops. He has been regularly attending services at Good Shepherd, Summerville and serving in lay ministry roles for several years. On Sunday, August 31, he preached and celebrated the Holy Eucharist during the Sunday morning service at Good Shepherd.
