One Bread. One Body. One Table.

Come to the table.

The 232nd Diocesan Convention of the Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina will be held November 18-19 at the North Charleston Marriott, with a Friday evening Eucharist and reception at Grace Church Cathedral in Charleston, SC. Delegates and visitors are welcome.

You are invited to the Welcome Lunch of the 232nd Diocesan Convention as 12 noon on Friday, November 18, at the North Charleston Marriott, as we celebrate our theme, "One Bread, One Body, One Table," and hear from +Ruth our Bishop, learn about special guests of honor, and a listen to a word from our featured Convention speaker, the Reverend Canon Stephanie Spellers.

To attend the Welcome Lunch and other parts of Convention, please register as a visitor at the link to the right. Visitor registration is open until November 4. The cost for attending lunch and the remainder of Friday is $50, and $100 for both days. If you are already registered as a clergy or lay delegate, or previously registered as a visitor for Friday, there is no action necessary.

Bishop Ruth Woodliff-Stanley welcomes all people of the Diocese of South Carolina to attend the 232nd Diocesan Convention, whether you are attending as a delegate, a member of the clergy, or a visitor.

This year's convention will be a place to share the emerging vision for the future of our historic diocese, as Bishop Woodliff-Stanley enters the second year of her episcopate. Watch the welcome video from the bishop to the left.

Setting the Table.

In the earliest generation of the Church, the twelve original disciples found they needed help in feeding the growing community of believers. Therefore they sought out faithful helpers to help serve tables. These became known as the first deacons.

We need help today as well, and we are calling on you: each delegation from a congregation is asked to bring supplies to set one round table that accommodates 10 people. We will provide the bare necessities (plates, silverware, napkins), but you are asked to bring other items that tell the story of your home church. Be aware that smaller delegations may be seated together, and that your table might be shared with another congregation or two.

Some examples: a centerpiece; flowers; tablecloths or textiles; things that speak to your history, like a photo album or framed picture, a Bible or Prayerbook; icons; sweetgrass baskets; the favorite beads of or gloves of a beloved church matriarch; an acolyte’s cross; a former priest’s home communion kit. You are limited only by your imagination and what can fit on your table.

Please bring your church banner and its stand to the convention room as well.

Be inspired by our special guests.

The keynote speaker for Convention will be The Reverend Canon Stephanie Spellers, who serves as Presiding Bishop Michael Curry’s Canon for Evangelism and Reconciliation. As a preacher, teacher, and author, Canon Spellers is one of the Episcopal Church’s leading thinkers on the topics of race, mission, and evangelism. Through her books and preaching, she has shown herself to be a clear-eyed guide on the Way of Love. She joins us to help point our diocese toward the future God has in store for us and our region.

International Guests and the International African American Museum

It was in showing hospitality to three unexpected guests that Abraham heard the promise of the Lord that his wife Sarah—even in her old age—would bear a son. We are honored at this gathering by the presence of very special guests.

  • The Most Rev’d Dr. Cyril Kobina Ben-Smith is the 12th Primate of the Church of West Africa and the Archbishop of Ghana.
  • The Right Rev’d Moisés Quezada Mota is the Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of the Dominican Republic and he will be joined by his wife, Mary Jeannette Pringle de Quezada.

Bishops Ben-Smith and Quezada are visiting us not only to further the relationships among our dioceses, but to join Presiding Bishop Michael Curry for a pre-opening event of the International African-American Museum in Charleston. The public is invited to attend an ecumenical celebration with a sermon from Bishop Curry at Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church on the evening of Wednesday, November 16. More information and registration is available at this link.

Details for Clergy - Friday evening Eucharist

Clergy are invited to vest in cassock, surplice, and white stole and process to reserved seating in the Convention Eucharist, held at Grace Church Cathedral at 5:30 on Friday evening, November 18. Clergy vesting space will be provided in the Sunday School classrooms (106-109 on the map below), and the procession will form in Hanahan Hall.

Before moving to the reception, clergy are asked to gather at the chancel steps for a photograph. If you are already registered, there is no action needed to RSVP for lunch.
