The Reverend Canon Ruth M. Woodliff-Stanley was elected on Saturday, May 1, 2021, to be the fifteenth bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina. On Friday, July 2, the Standing Committee was notified that the required majority of bishops and standing committees with jurisdiction have consented to her election.

The service of consecration for Bishop-elect Ruth Woodliff-Stanley will be held on Saturday, October 2, 2021, at Grace Church Cathedral in Charleston, South Carolina. Presiding Bishop Michael B. Curry is planning to attend in person and serve as the chief consecrator. All responses were required by RSVP on Friday, September 17.
The link to RSVP has now been closed. Seating assignments are being decided and those who requested to attend will be notified about their seating by email.

The service of consecration will also be livestreamed for those who are unable to attend in person at this link:
https://bit.ly/SCBishopXVConsecration. For those who attend in person, masks will be required and attendees are asked to be fully vaccinated to COVID-19.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, events initially planned to celebrate the Consecration on Friday, October 1, and an indoor reception after the service on October 2 have been postponed until a later date. When it is safer to gather together, the diocese looks forward to celebrating this joyous occasion with everyone who wishes to be there.

Consecration Events

While increasing concerns about the spread of the delta variant of the COVID-19 virus caused the planning committee to pause plans for a Friday evening dinner and reception, as well as an indoor reception after the Consecration, we still look forward with great joy to the Consecration of our XV Bishop on Saturday, October 2.

Hotel Information

Charleston has been awarded many accolades in recent years as one of the top destinations in the country and the world. For those who are planning to attend the Consecration from out of town, it is recommended that reservations be made as soon as possible. In addition to the regular seasonal tourism in the Fall, during the weekend of events, a local college will also be hosting a home football game and the school's "Parents' Weekend."

A block of rooms had been reserved at the Hilton Garden Inn Charleston located at 45 Lockwood Drive in Downtown Charleston, which is 1.6 miles away from Grace Church Cathedral. UPDATE: The original block is full but you are welcome to reserve a room outside of the block or look at the nearby options below.

For those interested in additional options, it can be more economical to stay west of the Ashley River in the section of Charleston known as West Ashley, or perhaps closer to the airport in North Charleston. Another option is the town of Mt. Pleasant just across the Ravenel Bridge from downtown Charleston.

While we do not have room blocks at the following hotels, they are less expensive options (except for a few in Mt. Pleasant). They are all within a 20-minute drive of the Consecration Weekend event venues. There are also additional options within a closer walking distance to Grace Church Cathedral, but not near the same price point.

Event Locations

Almost all events will be held at Grace Church Cathedral, though a few events will be held at Calvary Episcopal Church in Charleston.  Learn more about these event locations below:

Picture
Grace Church Cathedral, 98 Wentworth Street
Grace Church Cathedral, located at 98 Wentworth Street, was founded in 1846 and designated the cathedral church of the Diocese of South Carolina in 2015. Several consecration weekend events will be held at the church, or in the building to the right of the Cathedral. The large room downstairs in this building is called Hanahan Hall. You may enter Hanahan Hall from the front entrance on Wentworth Street, the side entrance on Glebe Street, or from the small parking lot in the rear of the building.

If on-street parking is not available, there is a parking garage located at the nearby corner of Wentworth and St. Philip Streets.
Visiting clergy and bishops will vest at separate locations in the two-story building next to the Cathedral.

Picture
Calvary Episcopal Church is located at 106 Line Street in downtown Charleston (zip code 29403). Founded in 1847, the church has a rich history and we are honored that Calvary will be hosting an event for diocesan clergy on Friday, October 1.

Parking is available along Line Street and also in a large field behind the church. Enter the lot from from Ashe Street (which is to the left of the church, if standing in front of it).

Ordination Gifts for the Bishop-elect

As we in the Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina prepare to welcome our Bishop-elect Ruth Woodliff-Stanley, the Transition Committee invites people from across the diocese to offer gifts in support of her ministry. We are also aware that Bishop-elect Ruth's ministry has touched many dioceses over the years, and some have expressed interest in gifting her an ordination gift.

It is the Episcopal Church’s tradition to contribute towards a bishop-elect’s vestments and other symbols of the Office of Bishop: stoles, cloaks, mitre, crosier, ring, pectoral cross and other liturgical items. Contributions may be made online (select "Bishop gift" under "Select a fund") and will be processed through the Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina. Checks may be sent to the diocesan office at the following address: PO Box 20485, Charleston, SC 29413. Checks should be addressed to The Episcopal Church in South Carolina/The Episcopal Church in SC and note on the memo line that the check is for the "bishop gift." Any amounts received will be added to a larger diocesan gift.

Questions about gifts may be directed to the Transition/Standing Committee members who are serving as gift coordinators: the Rev. Jim Dannals (jdannals@gmail.com) and Mary Dianish (mdianish@gmail.com).
