LEGAL NEWS: Lower Court Judge Issues Ruling Contrary to Supreme Court Judgement
We received some disappointing news today in our journey toward reconciliation in our diocese. South Carolina Circuit Court Judge Edgar Dickson, tasked in November 2017 by the South Carolina Supreme Court (SCSC) with a remittitur to enforce the final judgment of the SCSC which ruled in August 2017 that the diocesan property and 29 parishes should be returned to the parties affiliated with The Episcopal Church, issued an Order earlier today that seems to be contrary to that decision. His order indicates that the historic Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina has no interest in the properties of the breakaway congregations that left the historic diocese and The Episcopal Church. This news is not final, it just means the journey continues. Read more on our News Blog at this link. Archdeacon Callie Walpole has also provided a note on today's news that is at the bottom of the link.

Remembering Bishop Guerry
Learn about William Alexander Guerry
On June 9, 1928, William Alexander Guerry, the 8th Bishop of our Diocese, died five days after being shot in hs office in Charleston. We remember June 9 as his feast day, and our churches will observe Bishop Guerry Sunday on June 23, 2019. Here is the collect for this South Carolina saint: Collect: God of truth and sacrifice, we give thanks for your servant William Alexander Guerry, who, like the church's first martyr, gave witness to your liberating gospel and echoed Christ's healing words of forgiveness. May we also seek your truth as we offer ourselves in obedience to the same. All this we pray through him who is forever the bishop and reformer of our souls, Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.

St. Matthias Day
"Just as he was enrolled with the eleven apostles, so in our baptism are we," Bishop Adams says of St. Matthias in this feast-day reflection for February 24.
Collect: Almighty God, who in the place of Judas chose your faithful servant Matthias to be numbered among the Twelve: Grant that your Church, being delivered from false apostles, may always be guided and governed by faithful and true pastors; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Prayers for Deacons
On our Diocesan Prayer Calendar, we'll be praying for all deacons beginning Sunday, Feb. 11.
In the Episcopal Church, deacons have "a special ministry of servanthood" directly under the bishop. The ordination liturgy says: "In the name of Jesus Christ, you are to serve all people, particularly the poor, the weak, the sick, and the lonely."
Deacons proclaim the Gospel, prepare the holy table at Holy Eucharist, and serve in many other ways. "At all times, your life and teaching are to show Christ's people that in serving the helpless they are serving Christ himself."
We remember especially the Deacons who are canonically resident or licensed to serve in our diocese:
The Rev. Jane Diehl
The Rev. Judith L. Ewing
The Rev. Sandra Grant
The Rev. Dumont Henderson
The Rev. Karen Henwood
The Rev. William Henwood
The Rev. Charles Jett
The Rev. Fran McKinney
The Rev. Marilyn Powell
The Rev. Kerry Smith
The Rev. Michael Smith
The Rev. Gregory Smith
The Rev. Melissa Timmerman

Anthony Toomer Porter's birthday
The Rev. Dr. Anthony Toomer Porter was born January 31, 1828 in Georgetown, SC. We celebrate his 190th birthday this week, remembering his important role in the history of our diocese and our state. The quotation above is from the sermon he preached on his 40th anniversary as the founding rector of the Church of the Holy Communion in Charleston.
An Episcopal priest who served as a chaplain in the Civil War, Dr. Porter devoted his life to educating boys who had been orphaned or left destitute by the war. He opened the Holy Communion Church Institute in 1868; later it was named Porter Academy in his honor, and it was the forerunner of today's Porter-Gaud School.
Church of the Holy Communion celebrated his birthday with a special Evensong on January 28 at St. Luke's Chapel. That was the original site of the school's chapel, which was converted from a former federal arsenal after the occupation by U.S. troops in Charleston ended in 1879. His memoir, "Led On! Step by Step," recounts his experiences before, during and after the war.
The Rev. Chris Thompson, Interim Rector at Holy Communion, sent us this prayer, which Dr. Porter prayed when The Holy Communion Institute celebrated the formal occupation of the arsenal on January 8, 1880:
The Porter Prayer
Almighty God, the author of all being, and fountain of all wisdom and knowledge, regard with thy favor, visit with thy blessings, this Institution, established for the sound learning and Christian education, Grant to it the patronage needed for the conveying of its good designs into effect. Bless all who have hither to contributed to its support, and to raise up for it a continuous number of benefactors, through whose aid it may ever flourish. Inspire its teachers with a due sense of their solemn charge, and a suitable degree of knowledge and thought for its fulfillment. Bless the pupils with health and give them a due respect for their teachers; Grant them docility and diligence in the pursuit of knowledge, submission and tractableness under discipline, a readiness of mind to follow the counsels of wisdom and experience: Give them a due sense of the advantages they have enjoy and fill their young hearts with an ardent love for Thee, their Creator, Redeemer and Sanctifier; Guard their inexperience, keep them from self-conceit, and shield their virtue from the assaults of the world, the flesh, and the devil, thus preparing them to fulfill their course with honor, fidelity and success in this life, and to attain to everlasting life in the world to come, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Bishop Adams' Sermon at Holy Communion, Allendale on January 7, 2018
This week on our Diocesan Prayer Calendar, we've been praying for Holy Communion, Allendale, and Heavenly Rest, Estill. Bishop Adams visited both congregations at a combined service in Allendale on Sunday. A little history about these churches: Holy Communion began in 1875 as a mission called "Advent, Allendale" and was renamed when the building was built in 1903. Heavenly Rest was built in 1891 with a donation of $1,000 for a "neat and churchly building."
